Russia has made a high-technology pitch to India, promising cooperation on everything from hypersonic missiles to fifth-generation fighter jets. Ambassador Denis Alipov outlined an ambitious plan to expand the defense partnership that has provided 70% of India’s military equipment.
Alipov celebrated the existing joint production of the BrahMos supersonic missile, adding that it is “soon-to-be hypersonic.” This sets the stage for even more advanced weapon systems.
The centerpiece of the new offer is the “local production of the Su-57 fifth-generation fighter,” a move that would significantly boost India’s air combat capabilities and support its own AMCA program.
Beyond jets and missiles, Alipov confirmed discussions are underway for “drones, anti-drone systems, advanced radar, and other force multipliers.” This reflects a comprehensive approach to modernizing India’s armed forces.
This major defense push followed claims by Donald Trump that India would stop buying Russian oil. India’s MEA rebuffed this, stating its policy is guided by “national interest.” Alipov supported this, calling the oil trade “beneficial” to India’s economy.
