Renowned voice actor Peter Cullen, celebrated for his iconic roles as Optimus Prime in the Transformers series and Eeyore in the Winnie the Pooh franchise, has passed away at the age of 85. Cullen’s family confirmed that he died peacefully on Wednesday at his Los Angeles home, surrounded by loved ones.
Born in Montreal, Cullen’s career began in Canadian television and radio before he rose to prominence as one of the most recognizable voices in the industry. His portrayal of Optimus Prime began with the 1984 Transformers animated series, a role he reprised across seven major films from 2007 to 2023, as well as various spin-offs. Cullen’s voice also brought life to Eeyore, the beloved and melancholic donkey, through The New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh and numerous other adaptations in both television and interactive media.
Beyond these major roles, Cullen’s vocal talents extended to a range of characters, including KARR, the villainous counterpart to KITT in the classic series Knight Rider. His voice also contributed to the distinctive sounds of the creature in the 1987 sci-fi film Predator and even King Kong in the 1976 movie remake. Cullen attributed much of Optimus Prime’s heroic and composed demeanor to his brother Larry, a former US Marine Corps captain, who inspired him to depict the character as a strong yet non-aggressive leader.
Throughout his illustrious career, Cullen’s portrayal of Optimus Prime earned him significant accolades, including a Daytime Emmy nomination in 2011. In recognition of his enduring contributions to the field, he was awarded a lifetime achievement award at the Children’s & Family Emmy Awards in 2023.
