India is advancing its plans to purchase an additional five S-400 Triumf air defence systems from Russia. Moscow has already submitted a cost proposal to kickstart negotiations with New Delhi. The acquisition aims to bolster India’s air defence, especially in the eastern sector facing China. A final decision on this purchase will be made by the Cabinet Committee on Security once pricing is agreed upon and the Finance Ministry grants approval.
The initial contract for five S-400 systems, signed in 2018 for $5.43 billion, is expected to conclude with the final system’s delivery by November 2026. The S-400 systems have been pivotal in India’s air defence strategy, notably during Operation Sindoor in May 2025, which has strengthened India’s resolve to expand its fleet with these additional systems.
While the focus is currently on the S-400 systems, India has not yet made a decision regarding the acquisition of Russia’s Su-57 fifth-generation fighter aircraft. However, the Indian Air Force has shown interest in this proposal, particularly in response to China’s deployment of J-20 stealth fighters in Tibet.
The ongoing discussions about the S-400 purchase are expected to be part of broader India-Russia defence talks. These discussions will gain further significance with the anticipated visit of Russian President Vladimir Putin to India for the BRICS summit in September.
