Disney and OpenAI have formed a partnership that combines a $1 billion investment with a character licensing agreement for AI video generation. The deal provides Sora with access to more than 200 characters from Disney’s entertainment portfolio, spanning animated classics and modern superhero franchises.
The three-year agreement announced Thursday allows Sora users to generate short social videos featuring Disney characters through text-based prompts. These AI-created videos can be shared across platforms, enabling new forms of fan engagement. The licensing terms specifically exclude any use of actor likenesses or voices.
Disney’s involvement with OpenAI encompasses multiple business areas. The company will utilize OpenAI’s tools for new product development and experiences, while deploying ChatGPT for employee productivity. This broad implementation indicates Disney’s view of AI as central to its future business strategy.
CEO Bob Iger described the rapid advancement of AI as marking a pivotal moment for entertainment. He emphasized Disney’s intention to extend its storytelling reach through generative AI while maintaining a thoughtful and responsible approach that protects creative professionals. This careful language addresses concerns about AI’s impact on entertainment workers.
The entertainment industry has largely resisted AI partnerships, worried about data usage and labor relations. OpenAI has engaged with several major studios about Sora’s applications, but Disney’s agreement represents a significant breakthrough. The updated Sora platform, launched in September with limited access, enables users to generate videos from text descriptions, view community content, and create AI avatars that can appear in videos with appropriate permissions.
