Russia has accused the United States of relinquishing its position as a neutral mediator in the ongoing efforts to resolve the conflict in Ukraine. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov criticized Washington for no longer acting as an impartial broker and instead intensifying pressure on Russia through sanctions. This statement was made in Moscow as Lavrov condemned the growing military spending and defense expansions in Europe, which he claims are further escalating tensions.
The remarks from Lavrov come in the wake of an agreement among G7 leaders, including U.S. President Donald Trump, to bolster measures targeting Russia’s economy, particularly the energy sector. Since resuming office in 2025, Trump has been trying to mediate negotiations between Moscow and Kyiv, but these diplomatic efforts have hit a stalemate. Ukraine remains steadfast in rejecting Russian demands for territorial concessions, military limitations, and restrictions on Western support.
Meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin has voiced concerns over European countries’ increased military budgets and rearmament programs, suggesting they are preparing for conflict with Russia. Putin reiterated Moscow’s demand for Ukraine to retreat from the eastern Donbas region and reported that Russian forces are nearing the capture of the strategic city of Kostiantynivka. He further accused Ukraine and its Western allies of backing attacks on Russian infrastructure, which he claims are intended to destabilize Russia internally.
Since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine began in February 2022, the conflict has resulted in hundreds of thousands of casualties and displaced millions of people. Despite numerous international efforts to reach a resolution, the prospects for a negotiated settlement remain tenuous. The situation continues to evolve as both sides hold firm on their positions, leaving the path to peace uncertain.
