Vietnam is playing an increasingly pivotal role in enhancing cooperation between ASEAN and Russia, as underscored during the recent ASEAN–Russia Commemorative Summit, which celebrated 35 years of dialogue relations. Vietnamese Foreign Minister Lê Hoài Trung highlighted the country’s significant contributions to the summit, which aimed to bolster ASEAN’s central position and deepen its strategic partnership with Russia.
Prime Minister Lê Minh Hưng led the Vietnamese delegation, emphasizing the importance of dialogue, cooperation, the peaceful resolution of disputes, and respect for international law. At the summit, Vietnam also proposed expanding collaboration in critical sectors such as energy, trade, transport connectivity, agriculture, and digital transformation. These discussions resulted in new frameworks designed to strengthen ASEAN–Russia cooperation through 2030, with energy identified as a key pillar of the partnership.
In an effort to foster future regional cooperation, Vietnam announced plans to host the ASEAN–Russia Young Diplomats Summit in 2027. This move underscores the country’s commitment to nurturing future diplomatic ties and collaboration within the region.
On the sidelines of the summit, Vietnamese Prime Minister Hưng engaged in talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Both leaders reaffirmed their dedication to deepening the Vietnam–Russia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. Their discussions centered on expanding cooperation across several sectors, including energy, trade, infrastructure, science and technology, education, and transport.
Vietnam expressed optimism that the summit’s outcomes will enhance ASEAN–Russia relations, contribute to regional stability, and create new opportunities for economic growth and cooperation throughout Eurasia. The alignments forged and commitments made during the summit are expected to pave the way for a strengthened partnership between ASEAN and Russia in the coming years.
