Samsung Display is poised to claim the top spot in the global market for mid-to-large OLED panels by revenue in the third quarter, surpassing LG Display for the first time. Together, Samsung Display and LG Display are anticipated to dominate about 95% of the market share for OLED laptop and monitor panels, leaving Chinese manufacturers trailing significantly behind.
This development is bolstered by Samsung’s recent advancements in OLED technology, with the company initiating shipments of enhanced OLED laptop panels that boast higher brightness and increased durability. These upgraded panels have caught the attention of major technology brands such as Lenovo, Asus, Dell, and MSI, all of which are expected to incorporate this technology into their products.
In a strategic move to cut costs and boost production, Samsung is expanding its manufacturing capabilities with a new 8.6-generation production line. This initiative is expected to not only enhance output but also solidify Samsung’s standing in the competitive OLED market.
Despite substantial investments by Chinese display manufacturers to bridge the technological gap, they continue to encounter challenges with production yields. Industry experts acknowledge that while China’s OLED capabilities have seen considerable improvement, Korean companies maintain a competitive edge due to superior quality, strong customer trust, and expertise in producing large panels.
