China has expressed strong opposition to a proposed U.S. bill that aims to impose sanctions on major purchasers of Russian oil and natural gas. This legislation would target major global buyers, including China, in an effort to curb the purchase of Russian energy resources. China’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Lin Jian, made clear the nation’s stance, emphasizing that China is prepared to take necessary steps to safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of its companies.
In his remarks, Lin Jian criticized the unilateral nature of the proposed sanctions, arguing that they are neither based on international law nor authorized by the United Nations Security Council. He reiterated China’s firm opposition to such measures, which he described as unlawful and unilateral. This proposed U.S. bill has thus become another point of contention in the complex geopolitical relationship between the two countries.
The legislation under consideration by the United States is aimed at exerting economic pressure on Russia by targeting its energy exports, a significant source of revenue for the country. However, this move has raised concerns among nations that heavily rely on Russian energy, with China being one of the largest consumers of Russian crude oil and natural gas.
Lin warned against what he perceives as double standards and coercive tactics, suggesting that these approaches would ultimately be ineffective and counterproductive. He underscored China’s commitment to opposing actions that it views as unjustified sanctions, reinforcing the country’s stance against what it sees as an infringement on international trade practices.
