Ukraine has spent more than four years on the front lines of a war defined by Iranian drone technology. Now, President Zelenskyy has announced that the knowledge gained from that experience will be shared with the United States and Middle Eastern allies who are facing the same Shahed drone threat in their own region.
The announcement came after a formal US request, which Zelenskyy confirmed having received and acted upon. He ordered drone defense equipment and Ukrainian technical experts to be provided to Washington, framing the exchange as a mutual defense arrangement consistent with Ukraine’s foreign policy of supporting nations that support its own security goals.
Ukraine’s understanding of the Shahed drone is without equal. Russia has launched these weapons in extraordinary numbers — tens of thousands since the invasion began, including a single night attack involving over 800 drones and decoys. This scale of exposure drove Ukrainian defense engineers to develop countermeasures that are both technically sophisticated and strikingly affordable.
The interceptor drones Ukraine has developed specifically to hunt and destroy Shaheds cost as little as $1,000 per unit, a fraction of the cost of conventional air defense systems. This affordability makes them scalable and deployable in large numbers, which is precisely what is needed to counter swarm-style drone attacks. The global defense community has taken note, and Ukraine is now positioned to become a leading supplier of these systems internationally.
Zelenskyy also addressed the broader context of the offer. He noted that the Iran conflict has temporarily disrupted peace negotiations between Russia and Ukraine, and warned that Russia is attempting to exploit the resulting global distraction. Despite the setbacks, he pointed to recent territorial gains by Ukrainian forces as evidence that the country remains a formidable military actor even while expanding its role as a global defense partner.
