Japan’s recent diplomatic interactions with Russia have sparked concerns among several European countries, emphasizing the varying approaches to handling Moscow amid the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. As the G7 summit approaches, these differences in diplomatic strategy have come to the forefront, especially regarding how to engage with Russia while maintaining sanctions.
Diplomatic sources reveal that some European nations are uneasy about Japan’s recent contacts with Russian officials. They argue that this engagement might undermine the collective Western strategy, which focuses on isolating Russia through sanctions and political pressure. In late May, Japanese officials from the foreign and trade ministries, along with major business organizations, visited Russia to discuss economic matters with officials in charge of economic development and industry. These talks aimed to address the interests of Japanese companies still operating in Russia.
Japan has defended its outreach, emphasizing the necessity of maintaining communication channels, especially during times of strained international relations. The Japanese government highlighted that these discussions were crucial to safeguarding the assets and operations of Japanese businesses in Russia.
