The United States might suspend operations at its embassy in Kyiv if security conditions worsen, according to U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Speaking on the matter, Rubio highlighted that the safety of U.S. diplomatic personnel is under daily review and that any decision to alter the embassy’s operational status would be based on an assessment of unacceptable risks.
Rubio’s comments come amid ongoing tensions in the Ukrainian capital, which has faced threats during the prolonged Russia-Ukraine conflict. He pointed out that Russia has issued multiple warnings to foreign diplomatic missions about potential security threats in Kyiv, underscoring the precarious situation.
While the U.S. Embassy in Kyiv continues to operate at present, Rubio emphasized that the situation is fluid and subject to change if the threat level to diplomatic staff escalates. The priority, he noted, remains the safety and security of personnel, which could prompt a reevaluation of the embassy’s operations.
